The Avebury Beeches

Walking Diary: After walking over the magnificent Barbury Castle hill fort the landscape opens out to large stretches of green downland. As I started to walk over Smeathes Ridge I could see clues all around me that this was race horsing country. Four Mile Clump can be seen to the right. It’s distinctive because of the lines the gallops make cutting a sharp line from the trees at the top of this hill down to the base. The agricultural ‘shaping’ of the fields and racing lines intrigued me. Immaculate stripes of green and lush grass cascaded down the hill and around them there were also patches of uncultivated grass with pinkish hues.
