Walk 1: The Avebury Beeches. January. Wiltshire.

The Avebury Beeches

Walking Diary: A cold and crisp January day and the 87 miles of The Ridgeway stretch before me in a rutted track up a hill. This landscape is wonderfully familiar because I grew up near here. Itís open, exposed and rich with history. To my left I can see the crown of Silbury Hill peering out from the hills around it and the Calne Monument is more distant on the top of the Wiltshire Hills. The ground is brown and dry and the air is fresh and brisk. As I reach the brow of the hill I can see the classical shapes of three large Beech Copses, each resting on their barrows.
