Poplar Boulevard
The tall and gallant poplar trees that line the roads around Ypres in Belgium are a strong and regular feature of this landscape. In 1918, Paul Nash created this lithograph (top right) which depicts a band of tired soldiers marching down an avenue lined with trees. The trees appear to stand guard over the men as they take cover from the endless rain.
