The Callanish Row

UThe Callanish Row

The Callanish Stones are located on the west coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The stones are said to be about 5000 years old and many different theories exist about their meaning and purpose. The main stone complex contains about fifty stones in an unusual cross shape. The stones are ‘Lewisian gneiss rock’ which are some of the oldest in the British Isles. They have been crushed, melted and folded for over 3000 million years to form the hard crystalline which forms magnificent rock strata. The colours of the stones seem to reflect the weather and light around them, turning from dark purple to green and grey.
